백화점에서 가장 전기를 많이 쓸 것 같은 매장은 역시 TV가 가득 전시된 전자제품 공간입니다. 그 옆의 핸드폰, 태블릿.. 저마다 화면이 얼마나 선명한지 보여주기 위하여 형형색색의 영상들이 바쁘게 재생되고 있습니다. 매장에서 TV나 스마트폰을 구경하다 보면, 요즘 화면은 정말 예술의 영역이라는 생각이 들 수 밖에 없습니다. 색감이 쨍하고, 화면은 얇고, 곡면이 있기도 하고, 어떤 건 반으로 접히기도 합니다.
가장 많이 쓰이는 디스플레이는 크게 LCD, OLED, QLED, 그리고 플렉서블 OLED 정도로 나눌 수 있습니다. 기존의 LCD는 액정에 백라이트를 비춰주는 방식인데, 구조가 복잡하고 디스플레이의 두께가 두껍습니다. 반면 OLED는 스스로 빛을 내는 유기물질을 사용해서 훨씬 얇고 색 표현력도 뛰어납니다. 그런 이유로 얇고 선명한 게 셀링포인트인 요즘 스마트폰과 TV는 거의 대부분 OLED 기술을 사용하고 있습니다. OLED에 사용되는 유기 발광층은 고분자나 저분자 화합물로, 전기가 흐르면 스스로 빛을 내는 성질을 가지고 있습니다. 이 유기물질이 화면을 더 얇게, 가볍게, 선명하게 만드는 데 큰 역할을 합니다.
집에 있는 TV는 아기나 고양이가 뛰어다니다가 부딪히기만 해도 깨지는데 요즘 핸드폰은 어째서 반으로 접혀도 깨지지 않는가. 궁금하지 않으셨나요? 손에 가볍게 들고다니는 핸드폰 안에는 배터리, 디스플레이 등 모든 최첨단 기술이 집약되어있습니다. 폴더블 핸드폰들에는 플렉서블 OLED 기술이 쓰이고, 여기에는 유리 대신 투명하지만 탄성이 있는 고분자 기판을 사용합니다. 그 위에 유기 발광층, 전극, 보호층 등을 겹겹이 올리는 구조입니다.
그리고 최근 주목 받고 있는 QLED에 쓰이는 퀀텀닷 기술도 흥미롭습니다. 퀀텀닷은 몇 나노미터 크기의 반도체 입자로, '물질이 아주 작아져서 점이나 선처럼 되면 어떻게 되는가'에서 시작되었습니다. 그 과정에서 사이즈에 따라 방출하는 빛의 파장이 다른 것이 발견되었고, 단일한 소재를 사이즈만을 조절하여 빛의 모든 파장을 구현할 수 있다는 의미가 되어 현재의 디스플레이로 상용화되었습니다. 지금은 초반에 쓰이던 중금속을 제외한 인듐, 구리 기반의 친환경 퀀텀닷으로 전환하는 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있습니다.
